The Dedication of Verchota Street
Marilyn Helminiak of Milwaukee, Wisconsin is the Grand-daughter of Joseph Verchota. Verchota was the long-time president of the La Crosse AFL as well as co-serving as the Mayor of La Crosse. Former Mayor, John Medinger recently presented a copy of the newly named Verchota Street, sign to Marilyn at the site of Peace and Verchota Streets. These streets are located upon the former Hillview Golf Course, where housing development is currently being planned. Western Wisconsin AFL-CIO president, Terry L. Hicks, and Executive Board member, Bill Rudy was on hand to co-present the sign to Marilyn. The group also toured Vechota Park and visited the gravesite of Mayor Verchota, which is located at the Catholic Cemetery on Losey Boulevard. They finished with a visit to the La Crosse Historical Society where Mayor Verchota's papers are stored. |
